The town is composed of seven villages, each with its own unique character. Hyannis, the largest, serves as the Cape's commercial hub and is known for its bustling Main Street, which is lined with shops, galleries, and eateries. It's also home to the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, which provides an intimate look at the Kennedy family's life on the Cape.
Barnstable's maritime heritage is a central aspect of its appeal. The Hyannis Harbor offers boat tours, including ferries to the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, making it a perfect starting point for those looking to explore further. For beachgoers, the town boasts several beautiful beaches like Sandy Neck Beach, with its long stretches of sand and dunes, and Craigville Beach, popular for its warm waters and vibrant beach scene.
History enthusiasts will appreciate the Sturgis Library, one of the oldest libraries in the United States, and the 17th-century Barnstable Old Gaol, one of the oldest wooden jails in America.
