The Ballroom, near Wheddon Cross

The Ballroom is a beautifully converted stone outbuilding on a working farm, tucked into a private valley deep in the heart of Exmoor National Park. With origins dating back to the 14th century, the building was once used for hunt balls and retains many original features, including a solid oak floor. It sleeps up to 4 guests across two bedrooms, one double with a king-sized bed and one twin, both enjoying lovely views down the valley, along with one bathroom. Entrance is via a useful downstairs utility area, ideal for hanging up coats and storing muddy walking boots, with the main accommodation upstairs on the first floor of what was originally a 17th century threshing barn. The sitting room has a cosy wood-burning stove, and French doors lead from the dining area onto a private, enclosed patio terrace with a picnic bench, perfect for al fresco dining. The kitchen is fitted with a fridge with freezer compartment, microwave, electric oven and hob, toaster and kettle, along with a full range of utensils, cutlery, crockery and glasses. There is a television with Freeview, a DVD player and DAB radio, plus wireless broadband throughout. An iron, ironing board and hairdryer are provided, and a clothes airer, travel cot and high chair are available on request. Central heating is powered by a biomass boiler, with electricity and heating costs included in the price, and a starter basket of logs and kindling is supplied for the wood burner. Bed linen and towels are provided. Outside, guests have use of an enclosed, private patio with picnic bench, and can enjoy walks across the surrounding farmland (keeping clear of livestock, with a field plan provided). Stabling and grazing are available for those wishing to bring a horse on holiday, at GBP 12 per night per horse for stabling and turnout on a DIY basis, subject to prior arrangement.
