About the area
Between the lively Piazza Navona and the aristocratic Piazza Farnese, where the eponymous palace, home to the French Embassy, has stood since 1874, lies one of the city's many treasures, a place that, with its picturesque and characteristic market, represents the typical scene of old Rome. Campo de' Fiori is one of the most unique and beloved areas of the Capital. It's the ideal setting for a pleasant stroll among its historic wooden stalls selling fresh flowers, fruit, meat, and fish, as well as for a unique photo opportunity to share with friends on social media.
The only monumental square in the Historic Center not to host a church or basilica, it was created by order of Pope Callixtus III on the site where a colorful field of flowers once stood, as its name recalls. In 1440, the square was paved, and inns and hotels for pilgrims sprang up around its perimeter. In 1869, the market was relocated here from Piazza Navona and has traditionally taken place every morning from Monday to Saturday.
Campo de' Fiori, however, also has a dark side: the square was once the site of spectacular capital executions, including the impressive one of the monk and philosopher Giordano Bruno, who was burned at the stake here on February 17, 1600, accused of heresy. An imposing and austere statue, the work of Ettore Ferrari, was erected in his honor in the center of the square on June 9, 1889.
Campo de' Fiori has become one of the preferred nighttime gathering spots for young people, both Italian and foreign, thanks to the presence of many bars and pubs.
