About the area
Born in the early years of the last century, the Salario district takes its name from the ancient Roman consular road, Via Salaria, historically used for transporting salt. Just a few steps from the apartment lies the enchanting Villa Ada, a magnificent example of an English-style garden, dotted with small lakes and a blend of neoclassical and eclectic architecture. Once the private residence of King Victor Emmanuel III and the House of Savoy—who even built an air-raid shelter there during World War II—the villa now hosts the Egyptian Embassy.
Opposite Villa Ada’s entrance, you’ll find several catacombs, including the Catacombs of Priscilla. Among the largest and oldest in Rome, they date back to the late 2nd century and are named after the Roman matron Priscilla, whose son is said to have hosted Saint Peter.
Salario is a refined and elegant residential neighborhood, far from the usual tourist routes yet rich with hidden gems that offer a glimpse into authentic Roman life. The nightlife centers around Piazza Vescovio, where you’ll discover a variety of excellent traditional and contemporary restaurants, cozy cafés, and even a beloved local pub—an institution in the area for watching sports events, especially rugby.
