One of the city's most enchanting attractions is the Madeira Botanical Garden, which boasts a stunning collection of tropical and subtropical flora. Visitors can wander through meticulously landscaped gardens, marvel at exotic plants, and enjoy panoramic views of the city and harbor. The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is another horticultural haven, complete with oriental-inspired gardens and a museum housing an impressive collection of minerals and gemstones.
Funchal's historic center, with its charming cobblestone streets and 15th-century cathedral, offers a glimpse into the island's past. The Mercado dos Lavradores, a lively farmers' market, is a feast for the senses, where travelers can sample local fruits, vegetables, flowers, and the renowned Madeira wine.
For those interested in the arts, the Museu de Arte Sacra showcases a fine collection of Portuguese and Flemish art, while the CR7 Museum is dedicated to the life and career of Madeira's most famous son, soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Adventure seekers will find plenty to do in and around Funchal. The surrounding mountains provide excellent opportunities for hiking and mountain biking, with trails that offer breathtaking views. The nearby sea invites visitors to partake in whale and dolphin watching, deep-sea fishing, and scuba diving in the crystal-clear waters.
Cable car rides to the hilltop town of Monte are a popular activity, where one can visit the beautiful church of Nossa Senhora do Monte and even take a thrilling toboggan ride back down to Funchal in a traditional wicker sledge.
Funchal's culinary scene is a reflection of its diverse culture, with a range of dining options from high-end restaurants to local taverns serving up delicious Madeiran cuisine, such as espetada (grilled beef skewers) and bolo do caco (traditional garlic bread).
