Perched on a hillside above Malibou Lake, The Lake House at Malibu is a design-forward escape where high style meets California’s easy indoor-outdoor way of living. The lake below is one of the area’s best-kept secrets: a private community tucked into the Santa Monica Mountains, with roots going back a century and a long history of film shoots and Hollywood regulars. The lake itself isn’t open to the public, but its stillness sets the tone for everything around it. This is a quiet corner of the Malibu hills most visitors never find.
Oak-dotted ridgelines surround the home, and the adventure starts at the front door. Malibu Creek State Park’s quiet back side begins just beyond the neighborhood, where you can hike or bike the trail out to the famous M*A*S*H filming site. Paramount Ranch, the historic movie ranch once owned by Paramount Pictures, sits about a mile over the ridge and is coming back to life after years of restoration. Film crews are still a common sight out here, so don’t be surprised if you stumble onto a working set.
Inside, thoughtful architecture does the talking. Towering windows frame sweeping views of the mountains, while the fully equipped kitchen, stylish dining area, and spacious living room give everyone room to gather. Three beautifully appointed bedrooms and two full bathrooms offer restful nights, and everyday conveniences like in-home laundry, on-site parking, and a Peloton keep the stay feeling effortless.
Outside is where this home really shines. The upper deck holds a cozy firepit with panoramic views, made for slow sunsets and stargazing. Down in the backyard, a private pool is ringed by plush loungers and shaded seating, with a second firepit for laid-back evenings. Every corner of the property seems designed for lingering a little longer.
The dining scene nearby is full of character. The Old Place, an iconic mountain tavern, is barely five minutes up Mulholland, and Saddle Peak Lodge, known for wild game and old-hunting-lodge romance, is a short drive through the canyons. In Agoura Hills and Westlake Village, ten to fifteen minutes away, Basta keeps it casual with handmade Italian, Mediterraneo offers breezy lakeside dining, and Paul Martin’s serves American classics. And when the ocean calls, a gorgeous half-hour drive over the ridge lands you on the coast, where Neptune’s Net is a beachside legend and Nobu Malibu delivers fine dining with a side of celebrity spotting.
There’s plenty to fill the days beyond the table. The protected cove at Malibu Pier is a favorite for kayaking and family beach time, local outfitters lead scenic horseback rides through the hills at Paramount Ranch, and Zuma Beach brings steady winds for kite flying and volleyball courts that stay busy all summer. From its architectural charm to its rich cultural backdrop, The Lake House at Malibu is made for travelers who want to slow down, explore deeply, and savor every moment.
