About the area
Oaxaca, a cultural tapestry woven with indigenous traditions, colonial charm, and a vibrant contemporary scene, is a destination that captivates the hearts of travelers. Nestled in the valleys of Southern Mexico, Oaxaca is a city where ancient civilizations, Spanish conquests, and modern Mexican life converge to create a rich and diverse cultural experience.
The city's historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a picturesque tableau of colorful buildings, cobblestone streets, and baroque architecture. The Santo Domingo de Guzmán church is a baroque masterpiece, its interior adorned with gold leaf and intricate carvings. The Zócalo, Oaxaca's main square, is a lively hub where locals and visitors alike gather to enjoy music, food, and the occasional festival or parade.
Oaxaca's culinary scene is another of its many treasures. Known for its seven varieties of mole, a complex sauce that is a staple of Oaxacan cuisine, the city offers a gastronomic adventure that is both unique and delicious. Markets like Mercado Benito Juárez and Mercado 20 de Noviembre are bustling centers of food and culture, where you can sample everything from chapulines (grasshoppers) to tlayudas, large tortillas smothered with beans, cheese, and an array of toppings.
The surrounding region is dotted with ancient Zapotec and Mixtec ruins, the most famous being Monte Albán. Perched atop a mountain with panoramic views, this archaeological site provides a window into the lives of the region's pre-Columbian inhabitants. The nearby village of Teotitlán del Valle is renowned for its handwoven textiles, where artisans use traditional methods to create vibrant rugs and tapestries.
Oaxaca is also a center for art and crafts, with numerous galleries and workshops showcasing the work of local artists. The state's diverse indigenous communities contribute to a rich tapestry of folk art, from the whimsical alebrijes (colorful carved wooden figures) to the intricate black pottery of San Bartolo Coyotepec.
The city's natural surroundings offer a range of outdoor activities. The Sierra Norte mountains are perfect for hiking and mountain biking, while the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua provide a surreal landscape for exploration and relaxation in natural spring pools.
Festivals are the heartbeat of Oaxaca, with the Guelaguetza being the most famous. This annual event celebrates the region's indigenous cultures with music, dance, and traditional costumes, drawing visitors from around the world.
In essence, Oaxaca is a destination that offers an immersive cultural experience, a feast for the senses, and a warm welcome from its people. It's a place where every corner tells a story, and every visit leaves a lasting impression.
