About the area
Cirencester, often referred to as the "Capital of the Cotswolds," is a market town rich in history and English charm, making it a delightful destination for travelers seeking a blend of culture, history, and scenic beauty. The town's origins can be traced back to Roman times, and it was known as Corinium Dobunnorum, one of the most significant towns in Roman Britain.
Visitors can delve into this ancient past at the Corinium Museum, which houses one of the largest collections of Romano-British antiquities in the UK. The museum's exhibits provide a captivating insight into the daily lives of the Romans through exquisite mosaics, artifacts, and interactive displays.
The heart of Cirencester is its market square, framed by the impressive Parish Church of St. John Baptist, a fine example of a Perpendicular Gothic church. The church, often called the "Cathedral of the Cotswolds," boasts a stunning façade and a magnificent interior, complete with intricate stonework and stained glass windows.
For those who appreciate the great outdoors, Cirencester is surrounded by the rolling hills and picturesque villages of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Cotswold Way offers walkers a chance to explore the tranquil countryside, with its patchwork of fields, ancient woodlands, and charming stone cottages.
The town's streets are lined with boutique shops, antique stores, and traditional pubs, where visitors can enjoy local ales and classic English fare. The Cirencester Farmers' Market is a treat for foodies, offering fresh, locally-sourced produce and artisanal goods.
Cirencester Park, part of the Bathurst Estate, is a splendid example of an English landscape garden, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a family picnic. The park's broad avenues and hidden sculptures create a serene environment that contrasts with the bustling town center.
For a unique experience, the nearby Cotswold Water Park provides a network of over 150 lakes, offering a variety of water sports, birdwatching opportunities, and peaceful spots for fishing.
In essence, Cirencester is a gateway to the quintessential English countryside experience, combining historical depth with the natural beauty of the Cotswolds. It's a town that invites visitors to step back in time while enjoying the comforts and pleasures of the present.
