The Neighborhood
Bastille, in the centre of the square, the famous "Génie de la Liberté" (Spirit of Freedom) commemorates the revolution of 1830 (also known as the Trois Glorieuses), but is well known for the 1789 revolution. This square was occupied by the Bastille Prison, which was a symbol of absolute power during the Monarchy. The prison was destroyed after the revolution, nothing remained. The square hosts large cultural events such as concerts, fairs and citizen events, and has many bars and restaurants close by like at rue de la Roquette. The iconic landmark of the district is the Opéra Bastille. Designed by architect Carlos Ott, this marvel of modern architecture with transparent facades was inaugurated on the day of the bicentenary of the French Revolution. The Promenade plantée is an extensive green belt that follows the old Vincennes railway line. Beginning just east of the Opéra Bastille with the elevated Viaduc des Arts, it follows a 4.7 km (2.9 mi) path eastward that ends at a spiral staircase leading to the boulevard Périphérique beltway. You can visit the Viaduc des Arts, where a line of shops feature the work of specialized craftsmen.
