About the area
Carovigno, a charming town in the Puglia region of Italy, is a hidden gem that offers a serene escape into the heart of Italian culture and history. Known for its stunning whitewashed houses, ancient olive groves, and pristine coastline, Carovigno is a destination that promises an authentic Italian experience away from the hustle and bustle of the more frequented tourist spots.
The town is crowned by the impressive Castello Dentice di Frasso, a medieval castle that has been the sentinel of the area for centuries. Visitors can explore the castle's fortified walls and towers, which offer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Adriatic Sea. The castle also hosts cultural events and exhibitions, providing a glimpse into the region's rich heritage.
Carovigno's historical center, or "centro storico," is a labyrinth of narrow streets and alleys, where every corner reveals a picturesque scene. The town's architecture is a testament to its diverse past, with influences from the Normans, Swabians, and Aragonese. The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli and the numerous small chapels dotted around the town are beautiful examples of religious architecture that visitors can admire.
The area around Carovigno is renowned for its olive oil production, and a visit to a local masseria (a traditional farmhouse) to learn about the process of making extra virgin olive oil is a must. Many masserie also offer cooking classes, where you can learn to prepare Pugliese specialties using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.
For those looking to relax by the sea, the Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve is a short drive from Carovigno. This protected area boasts a stretch of unspoiled coastline with crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. The reserve is also a haven for wildlife, offering opportunities for birdwatching and nature walks.
Carovigno's culinary scene is a delight for food enthusiasts. The town's restaurants serve up traditional dishes that highlight the flavors of the region, such as "orecchiette" pasta with turnip tops and fresh seafood from the Adriatic. The local "focaccia" and "taralli" are snack staples not to be missed.
With its blend of history, culture, natural beauty, and gastronomy, Carovigno provides a tranquil yet enriching Italian experience. It's a place where you can immerse yourself in the slow pace of life, savor the simple pleasures, and leave with a sense of having discovered one of Italy's best-kept secrets.
