One of the most iconic being the Tanah Lot Temple, located on the west coast of Bali. This sacred Hindu temple sits atop a large rock formation surrounded by the Indian Ocean and is believed to have been built in the 16th century by the Hindu priest Danghyang Nirartha. The temple is dedicated to the god of the sea, Baruna, and is a place of pilgrimage for Balinese Hindus. The temple’s most striking feature is its location, which makes it appear as if it is floating on the water during high tide. During low tide, visitors can walk to the temple and explore the cave underneath the rock formation where there are shrines dedicated to the sea serpent gods.
