Willemstad, the capital city of Curaçao, is a vibrant and colorful destination that offers a unique blend of European and Caribbean cultures. The city's historic center, adorned with Dutch colonial architecture painted in bright hues, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that provides a picturesque backdrop for exploration.
The Handelskade is one of the city's most iconic landmarks. This row of brightly colored buildings along the harbor is perfect for leisurely strolls where you can admire the architecture, visit shops and cafes, and watch ships pass by.
The Queen Emma Bridge, also known as the "Swinging Old Lady," is another must-see. This floating pedestrian bridge connects the Punda and Otrobanda neighborhoods across Sint Anna Bay and swings open to allow boats to pass through.
History enthusiasts will find Fort Amsterdam intriguing. It serves as the Governor's Palace but also houses a museum detailing the island's history. The Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue, built in 1732 and one of the oldest synagogues in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere, also has an attached museum showcasing Jewish history on Curaçao.
Art lovers will appreciate Willemstad's thriving arts scene with numerous galleries showcasing local artists' works. The Nena Sanchez Gallery located in a restored 19th-century house displays works from this famous local artist who captures Curaçao's spirit with her vibrant paintings.
Nature enthusiasts can explore Curaçao’s stunning marine life through snorkeling or scuba diving adventures or visit Christoffel National Park for hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities.
Foodies will enjoy exploring Willemstad’s culinary scene which reflects its multicultural heritage. Local dishes combine influences from African, Dutch and Latin American cuisines. The Floating Market is an interesting place to visit where Venezuelan traders sell fresh produce and seafood from their boats.
