About the area
Sapporo, the capital of Japan's northernmost island, Hokkaido, is a city that offers a delightful mix of urban sophistication and natural beauty. Known for its annual Snow Festival, Sapporo attracts visitors from all over the world to witness the stunning ice sculptures and winter sports events.
The city's layout, designed in a grid pattern, makes it easy to navigate and explore. At the heart of Sapporo is Odori Park, a long, broad boulevard that stretches east to west and is the venue for the Snow Festival. It's a green oasis during the summer, perfect for picnics and leisurely strolls, and it offers a picturesque setting with the Sapporo TV Tower as a backdrop.
Sapporo is also renowned for its beer, and a visit to the Sapporo Beer Museum provides an insight into the brewing process, as well as the chance to taste some of the freshest beers. Nearby, the Sapporo Beer Garden serves up the famous Genghis Khan, a local mutton barbecue dish that pairs perfectly with a cold pint.
For those interested in the arts, the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art showcases a range of contemporary works, while the Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara is known for its outstanding acoustics and hosts a variety of musical performances.
Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the easy access to nature that Sapporo offers. Moerenuma Park, designed by the renowned sculptor Isamu Noguchi, is a vast park that combines art and nature. In the winter, the nearby mountains provide excellent opportunities for skiing and snowboarding, with resorts such as Sapporo Teine and Sapporo Kokusai within reach for a day trip.
Shopping in Sapporo is a pleasure, with options ranging from the latest fashion at Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade to local crafts and fresh produce at Nijo Market. The city's underground pedestrian space, known as Chikaho, connects major stations and shopping areas, making it convenient to shop and dine without braving the elements.
Foodies will revel in Sapporo's culinary scene, which includes fresh seafood from Hokkaido's cold waters, rich miso ramen, and delectable sweets like the famous Shiroi Koibito cookies.
With its combination of cultural attractions, delicious cuisine, and access to outdoor activities, Sapporo offers a unique experience that caters to all types of travelers, making it a must-visit destination on any trip to Japan.
