A little history:
Place Ste-Colombe: Formerly a market in the 12th century, this square was renovated in 2008. Now adorned with benches and trees, it has become a popular spot for local residents and visitors alike to take a pleasant break.
The Saint-Pierre district is often described as the birthplace of Bordeaux. It is no coincidence that this ancient Gallo-Roman port, transformed into a medieval city, adopted the name of the patron saint of sailors and fishermen. In the 12ᵉ century, the port was filled in. The fortified city walls were demolished in the 18ᵉ century to make way for the Place de la Bourse. The defensive Cailhau Gate, which rises to 35 metres, as well as pedestrian or semi-pedestrian streets such as Rue des Argentiers, Rue des Bahutiers and Rue du Chai des Farines bear witness to the district’s commercial and craft history. In the 16ᵉ century, the district also attracted the bourgeoisie, particularly around the church of Saint-Rémi.
