About the area
Hunawihr, nestled in the heart of the Alsace wine region in France, is a picturesque village that offers a serene escape into a world of medieval charm and natural beauty. This quaint village is renowned for its well-preserved architecture, tranquil vineyards, and as a haven for wildlife enthusiasts.
One of the village's most enchanting features is the 16th-century fortified church, Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur, which stands sentinel over the rolling vineyards. The church, with its impressive bell tower, is a testament to the region's rich history and provides a stunning backdrop for photographs.
Wine connoisseurs will find themselves in paradise as Hunawihr is part of the famous Alsace Wine Route. Visitors can indulge in tastings of the region's celebrated Riesling and Gewürztraminer wines, often hosted by local vintners who are passionate about their craft. The surrounding vineyards offer not just exquisite wines but also panoramic views of the Vosges Mountains, making for an idyllic setting to explore on foot or by bicycle.
For those interested in wildlife, the Hunawihr Butterfly Garden and the Centre de Réintroduction des Cigognes et des Loutres (Stork and Otter Reintroduction Center) are must-visit attractions. The Butterfly Garden is a kaleidoscope of color, with hundreds of butterflies fluttering in a tropical greenhouse. The Stork and Otter Center, on the other hand, is dedicated to the conservation of these species and provides an opportunity to observe them in naturalistic habitats.
The village itself is a delight to explore, with its cobblestone streets, traditional half-timbered houses adorned with flowers, and small artisan shops selling local crafts and produce. The atmosphere is one of tranquility and timelessness, inviting visitors to slow down and savor the simple pleasures of Alsatian village life.
Culinary enthusiasts will enjoy the local cuisine, which is a blend of French and German influences. Traditional dishes such as tarte flambée (also known as flammekueche), choucroute garnie (sauerkraut with sausages and other meats), and kugelhopf (a type of cake) can be savored in cozy restaurants and winstubs (wine lounges).
In essence, Hunawihr is a destination that offers a peaceful retreat into a world where the past is lovingly preserved, nature is cherished, and the finer things in life—good food, fine wine, and beautiful surroundings—are celebrated. It's a perfect spot for those seeking a blend of cultural heritage, natural beauty, and gastronomic delights.
