The City of Tulum was once known as Zama, meaning “City of the Dawn”. Tulum is a town on the Caribbean coastline of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. It is one of the last cities inhabited by the Mayan people and was once an important trading hub, generating enormous wealth exporting jade and obsidian. Now, it is a fascinating city-museum, with well preserved temples and stunning coastal views. Tulum is home to great beaches, lush jungles, Mayan ruins, gorgeous lagoons, and an upscale nightlife.
NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

Gran Cenote - this sinkhole is located just a few kilometers away from Tulum, on the way to Coba. It consists of several cenotes winding along the verdant jungle floor, connected by wooden walkways.
Sian Ka’an Biosphere - home to thousands of species of beautiful plants and animals. Some of the most pristine waters in Mexico.
The Ruins of Coba - some of Yucatan’s best-preserved and most remarkable Ancient Mayan ruins.

About the area
Tulum, located on the Caribbean coastline of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, is a destination that offers a rare combination of relaxation, history, and natural beauty. Known for its stunning beaches with powdery white sand and turquoise waters, Tulum provides a tranquil escape for beachgoers and sun worshippers. The area is also a haven for snorkelers and divers, with the nearby Great Maya Reef offering a rich underwater world teeming with marine life.
One of Tulum's most iconic attractions is the Tulum Ruins, an ancient Mayan city perched on a cliff overlooking the sea. This archaeological site is one of the few walled cities built by the Maya and its Temple of the Frescoes and the Castillo are particularly impressive structures that offer a glimpse into the past. The juxtaposition of the ruins against the backdrop of the Caribbean Sea makes for a truly breathtaking sight.
For those seeking a more immersive experience in nature, Tulum is surrounded by cenotes—natural sinkholes filled with fresh water that are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and even cave diving. The Grand Cenote, Cenote Dos Ojos, and Cenote Calavera are among the most popular, each with their own unique features and crystal-clear waters.
Tulum's bohemian vibe is palpable throughout the town, with a variety of boutique hotels, yoga retreats, and wellness centers that cater to those looking to unwind and recharge. The town also boasts a vibrant culinary scene, with an array of dining options ranging from traditional Mexican eateries to upscale restaurants serving international cuisine. Many of these establishments focus on fresh, local ingredients, providing a true taste of the region.
For the adventurous, the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a short drive away. This protected area is home to a diverse ecosystem, including tropical forests, mangroves, and a large marine section intersected by a barrier reef. Visitors can explore the reserve through guided tours, which may include kayaking, bird watching, and discovering the area's unique flora and fauna.
In essence, Tulum is a destination that caters to a variety of interests, from history and culture to nature and relaxation. Its serene beaches, mystical cenotes, rich Mayan heritage, and laid-back atmosphere make it a place where every traveler can find their own slice of paradise.
