It’s the authentic Provençal grounds that will truly enchant you. Location:
In the Bouches-du-Rhône department of Provence, Mas De La Prairie is located in a rural setting yet not isolated with Saint-Rémy-de-Provence just a short drive away.
Historic Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (3.5km) is a bustling town loved for its charming ambience, many restaurants (from French bistros to high-end establishments), café terraces, art galleries, Van Gogh trail and the town’s famous Wednesday morning market. It’s a joy to wander around the narrow lanes of the old quarter and it’s good to know that you can get everything you need from the many shops and large supermarkets.
Hire bikes or hop in your car to explore some of the authentic nearby villages such as Mollégès (8km), Saint-Andiol (9km) and Eyragues (6km), passing typically rural landscapes of olive groves, orchards and farmland. Picture-perfect Eygalières (13km) is also within easy reach, an idyllic hilltop village where a small handful of A-list celebrities have bought houses.
Driving south towards the heart of Les Alpilles, hilltop Les Baux-de-Provence (14km), one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, is one of the most visited villages of the region so head there early to walk around its medieval centre and perched château. Enjoy lunch out in delightful Maussane-les-Alpilles (14km), known for its excellent extra virgin olive oil, whilst the tiny village of Paradou is a must for gastronomes who will be keen to dine out at Le Bistrot du Paradou.
Les Alpilles is a wonderful region for long walks, hiking, horse-riding, rock-climbing, cycling and mountain biking. Art lovers will adore the art galleries and Van Gogh trails of St-Rémy and Arles (28km) or watch artwork being projected on to quarry walls at Carrières des Lumières (13km). Wine enthusiasts can visit local vineyards around St-Rémy as well as venture to the Rhône valley and wineries of the Luberon.
Beyond Les Alpilles, spend the day admiring the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Avignon (21km), the beautifully preserved Roman ruins of Nîmes (48km) or the antique shops of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (30km), not to mention its Sunday morning brocante.
Appreciate the beauty of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse (36km), a paradise for outdoor adventurists, sail along the Sorgue River by canoe or kayak and discover the iconic perched villages of the Luberon with gems such as Gordes (40km), Ménerbes (35km) and Roussillon (51km) all within an hour’s drive.
