Location:
Mas de Stella is located in a countryside setting, only 2km from the heart of historic Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in the Bouches-du-Rhône department of southern France.
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a delightful town known for its art galleries and associations with Vincent Van Gogh – follow the Dutch artist’s trail ending at Saint-Paul de Mausole where he spent the last part of his life. The town’s Wednesday morning market attracts visitors from across the region – get there early to find a parking space and experience the wonder of the many stalls selling fresh vegetables, fruit, local cheeses, meat, honey, lavender soaps and other artisan products.
The town is also known for its restaurants from charming bistros to upmarket establishments, as well as cafes and wine-bars. Wine is produced from vineyards close to Saint-Rémy whilst the wineries of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the Rhône valley can be reached within an hour’s drive.
Across the landscapes of Les Alpilles, enjoy long walks, follow hiking and cycling trails, admire the scenery on horse-back or try out rock-climbing. Visit picture-perfect villages such as Eygalières (14km), Maussane-les-Alpilles (12km), and idyllic Les Baux-de-Provence (11km), sample some of France’s finest olive oil and dine out in Michelin starred restaurants.
On the banks of the Rhône, Arles (26km), also known for its artistic heritage and Van Gogh trail, is a wonderful day out whether soaking up the ambience of the cafes at Place du Forum or visiting the fascinating Roman amphitheatre. Further north up the river, Avignon (21km) is equally very beautiful, home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites as well as vibrant markets, restaurants and wine-bars.
Just over half an hour away is L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (34km), a must for antique lovers who should visit the town’s famous brocante on a Sunday morning. At any time of the week it’s a lovely place to explore with its water wheels, antique stores and restaurant terraces by the river. Perhaps combine with a hike near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, a stunning part of Provence where you can also hire canoes and kayaks along the Sorgue River.
