About the area
Eygalières, a picturesque village nestled in the heart of the Alpilles mountains in Provence, France, is a destination that captivates with its rustic charm and serene beauty. This quaint commune is a treasure trove of Provençal tradition, offering a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of more tourist-heavy locales.
Visitors to Eygalières are greeted by olive groves, vineyards, and fields of lavender that stretch as far as the eye can see, painting a landscape that is quintessentially Provençal. The village itself is a delight to explore, with its narrow cobblestone streets, ancient stone houses, and the ruins of a 12th-century castle perched atop a hill, providing panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
The weekly market in Eygalières is a highlight for both locals and tourists, offering a chance to indulge in the region's fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and handcrafted goods. It's an authentic Provençal experience, where the vibrant colors, enticing aromas, and friendly chatter create a lively atmosphere.
For those interested in cultural heritage, the 12th-century Saint-Laurent Church stands as a testament to the village's historical significance. The Chapelle Saint-Sixte, just outside the village, is another iconic landmark, often featured in photographs for its classic Romanesque architecture against the backdrop of the Alpilles.
Eygalières is also an excellent base for outdoor enthusiasts. The Alpilles Regional Natural Park offers numerous trails for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural splendor of the region. The park is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, and the limestone peaks provide a dramatic setting for outdoor adventures.
Gastronomy is another compelling reason to visit Eygalières. The village boasts several fine dining establishments that serve exquisite Provençal cuisine, made with the freshest local ingredients. The region's wines, particularly those from the nearby Les Baux-de-Provence appellation, are a perfect complement to any meal.
For a truly relaxing experience, visitors can stay in one of the charming bed and breakfasts or boutique hotels that dot the village. These accommodations often feature lush gardens and swimming pools, offering a peaceful retreat after a day of exploration.
In summary, Eygalières is a gem in the South of France that offers a blend of natural beauty, historical richness, and culinary excellence. It's a place where the slow pace of life and the warmth of the Provençal sun work in harmony to create an idyllic getaway for those seeking a taste of authentic French country living.
