About the area
Hiroshima, Japan, is a city that provides a deeply touching experience for its visitors. Globally recognized as the first city to be attacked with a nuclear weapon during the Second World War, Hiroshima today stands as a beacon of peace and resilience, boasting numerous monuments and museums that pay homage to its sorrowful history.
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is the most renowned site in the city. It is home to the Genbaku Dome or Atomic Bomb Dome, which is the only structure that remained intact near the bomb's hypocenter. The park also features various memorials, monuments, and museums that offer an extensive understanding of what transpired on August 6, 1945.
But Hiroshima isn't solely about its history. The city has been impressively rebuilt and now hosts numerous modern attractions. For those interested in history, Hiroshima Castle is an essential visit; this restored castle offers a glimpse into Japan's feudal era.
Nature enthusiasts will find tranquility in Shukkei-en Garden with its miniature landscapes modeled after Chinese scenery. Just off Hiroshima's coast lies Miyajima Island - another natural treasure housing Itsukushima Shrine and its renowned floating torii gate.
Food lovers will relish trying local delicacies such as okonomiyaki (a savory pancake) and oysters which are especially favored in this region.
In summary, Hiroshima offers an extraordinary mix of history, culture, nature, and food that makes it a rewarding destination for any traveler.
