The Home
The Glenburnie suite is located in the South Wing of Thirlestane Castle. Thirlestane is one of the oldest and finest castles in Scotland, located in the Lauderdale valley just 30 miles south of Edinburgh.
This charming one-bedroom suite takes its name from the moor behind the castle. Glenburnie was also the name of a horse bred by the Maitland family which went on to become European Champion in three-day eventing. A portrait of the horse is reflected back into the sitting room by a large mirror in the hallway.
The spacious bedroom has been finished with gentle greens and accents of pink and red creating a calming space. Statement pieces of furniture from the castle collection have been used including the dressing table which was formally the base for a spinet harpsicord.
Once the castle’s Housekeeper’s Room, the original Victorian range in the sitting room has been sympathetically restored. This range was long forgotten...

The Neighborhood
The property is located in the South Wing of Thirlestane Castle - a magnificent 16th century castle set within the beautiful Scottish Borders. It is located within an hour’s drive of Edinburgh, near the village of Lauder. The Scottish Borders is so popular because of the sheer range of experiences and activities it offers as well as being home to some of the finest textiles in the world. This small and accessible region has high-end shopping experiences for luxury products, historic houses and castles, festivals, arts and crafts, delicious local produce and miles of rolling hills, beautiful valleys and the Berwickshire coastline. For those that love the outdoors, there is a variety of different activities available close at hand, including horse riding, exhilarating cycling routes, fishing, golf and spectacular walking including the Southern Upland Way which crosses through the Estate. The Scottish Borders is also renowned for producing the highest quality textiles including tweed, cashmere and tartan. The town of Hawick is the ‘Home of Tweed’ and some of the best cashmere and knitwear producers in the world are based here along with the Borders Distillery. A wide range of premium Scottish textile products are available to purchase here along with tailored items. Several of the mills across the Scottish Borders also offer visitor experiences and behind-the-scenes tours including Johnstons of Elgin where you can watch designer items being produced for Channel among others, and Lovat where you can even design your own family tartan. The nearby market towns of Kelso and Melrose have a variety of great restaurants as well as independent shops to browse offering local produce, crafts and gifts. The castle’s proximity to Edinburgh makes day trips to Scotland’s capital easily accessible. Take in the scenic Borders Railway by catching the train at Stow or allow us to arrange a private driver to take you. As well as the tourist sites such as Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, Royal Yacht Britannia and the Palace of Holyrood House, Edinburgh is a wonderful city for shopping and has many incredible restaurants. Upon request, the Thirlestane team can help to organise a range of unforgettable experiences for guests including horse riding, spa treatments, afternoon tea, whisky tasting and curated tours of the Borders.
