About the area
Reliance, Tennessee, is a hidden gem nestled in the southeastern part of the state, offering a serene escape into nature and a glimpse into America's historical landscape. This small community, situated along the scenic Hiwassee River, is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
For those seeking adventure, the Hiwassee River is a major draw. It is renowned for its Class I to Class III rapids, making it an ideal spot for whitewater rafting and kayaking. The river's crystal-clear waters also provide excellent opportunities for trout fishing, and the surrounding forests are perfect for hiking and wildlife spotting.
The Cherokee National Forest surrounds Reliance, offering miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The forest is home to diverse flora and fauna, and the changing seasons paint the landscape with a breathtaking palette of colors, from the fresh greens of spring to the fiery hues of autumn.
History enthusiasts will appreciate the area's rich heritage. The Historic District of Reliance features the Hiwassee Union Baptist Church and the Watchman's House, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The church, built in 1899, is a beautiful example of a rural Gothic Revival church, while the Watchman's House, once home to the keeper of the nearby railroad bridge, tells the story of the region's transportation and industry.
The nearby town of Benton offers additional historical sites, including the Polk County Courthouse and the Chilhowee Gliderport, where visitors can experience the thrill of engine-free flight over the stunning Tennessee landscape.
For a more relaxed experience, visitors can enjoy picnicking along the riverbanks or taking a leisurely float down the Hiwassee River, soaking in the tranquility of the area. The nearby Webb Brothers General Store, a fixture since 1936, provides a charming glimpse into the past and a place to pick up supplies or souvenirs.
In the evenings, the lack of light pollution in the area makes for spectacular stargazing opportunities, allowing visitors to unwind under a canopy of stars.
Reliance, Tennessee, may be off the beaten path, but its combination of natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and historical significance make it a worthwhile destination for those looking to explore the quieter, more picturesque side of the Volunteer State.
