About Kaštel Kambelovac
Kaštel Kambelovac; back in 1517 the Split noblemen, brothers Cambi, built a castle on a small islet to protect the inhabitants of villages Lašan and Kruševik. The castle was cylindrically shaped (only one in Kaštela) and suitable for defense. The citadel was surrounded by the sea but was later connected with the mainland by filling up and leveling. The following two castles were built by Grissogno and Lipeo families. In 1525 the peasants from village Kruševik built two castles, Velika I Mala Pišker, and this is a unique example of peasants building their fortresses.
About the area
The city of Kaštela is located between the ancient towns of Split (ancient Greek: Aspalathos/Spalatos) and Trogir (ancient Greek: Tragourion), close to Solin (ancient Greek: Σάλωνα), the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia and the birthplace of Emperor Diocletian.
The first school botanical garden in Croatia was founded in Kaštela ; on 4 hectares of land and over 1400 different plants. The central part of the park in the arboretum is built in an English park landscape style.
Croatian Romeo and Juliette, Miljenko and Dobrila lived in Kaštela in the second half of the 17th century. This is a tale of forbidden love. Their tombstone is located in the St. John’s chapel, with the inscription: "Lovers, rest in peace." The authentic castles of Dobrila (the Vitturi castle, 15th – 16th century) and Miljenko (the Rušinić castle, 15th century), are located in Kaštel Lukšić.
