About the area
Ostuni, known as "La Città Bianca" for its whitewashed buildings, is a captivating hilltop town in Italy's Puglia region. This enchanting destination is a labyrinth of narrow streets, steep staircases, and charming piazzas, all bathed in a pristine white that glows under the southern sun.
Visitors are drawn to Ostuni for its picturesque old town, which is a delight to explore on foot. The town's architecture is a testament to a rich history that spans from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, with the impressive 15th-century Ostuni Cathedral being a standout landmark. Its rose window, one of the largest in the world, is a marvel of intricate design.
The town's elevated position offers stunning views of the surrounding olive groves and the azure Adriatic Sea. The countryside around Ostuni is dotted with traditional 'trulli' houses, unique to the region and a must-see for those interested in local culture and architecture.
Ostuni's proximity to the coast means that visitors can easily combine a cultural city break with a seaside getaway. The beaches near Ostuni are some of the best in Puglia, with crystal-clear waters and fine sand. The nearby Torre Guaceto is a protected marine area and nature reserve, perfect for snorkeling and discovering the diverse Mediterranean flora and fauna.
The town's culinary scene is another highlight, with a focus on fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Olive oil from the region is renowned for its quality, and the local cuisine features a variety of vegetable-based dishes, fresh seafood, and hand-made pasta like 'orecchiette'. Dining in Ostuni is not just about the food; it's an atmospheric experience, with many restaurants offering al fresco seating along the charming streets or on terraces with panoramic views.
Throughout the year, Ostuni hosts a variety of events and festivals that celebrate its heritage and vibrant culture. From traditional religious processions to music and art festivals, there's often something happening in the town's bustling squares.
For those looking to delve deeper into the local way of life, Ostuni's market is a lively spot where you can find everything from fresh produce to artisanal crafts. It's an excellent place to mingle with the locals and pick up unique souvenirs.
In summary, Ostuni is a destination that offers a rich blend of history, culture, natural beauty, and gastronomy. It's a place where travelers can immerse themselves in the slow pace of Italian life, all while enjoying the visual feast of a town that truly lives up to its moniker as the White City.
